Alrighty, so here’s the thing. I probably enjoyed the first episode of Magical Boys more than some others. I reckon that to other anime viewers/bloggers, the first episode merely mocked the magical girl genre. That it was merely self aware and was riding on a singular joke. But to me, it was highly amusing because it was a straight up genderswapped episode of Pretty Cure. And it was totally UNironic, thus making it ironic in a good way. But ep 2 is gonna be the real make or break of Magical Boys.

And I’d say… yeah, it’s made it. It’s exposition heavy, but also amusing. If only because the evil exposition is visually punctuated with the evil Lord Zundar, the evil hedgehog from Planet Evil, who is the evil mentor/mastermind for the evil student council of evil magical boys.

Meanwhile, the good guy portion of the exposition is punctuated with straight up manslaughter.

For a fluff show, I’m actually intrigued on how they’ll proceed. Now that the exposition’s all handled, it should be monster of the week territory, but with their presumably short episode run, they probably won’t be able to do that too much. We’ll probably get a couple episodic eps next to showcase the different boys and their relationship?

It’s also amusing to note that in magical girls shows, Pink is usually the leader. Here, the leader’s Red/Scarlet. Which means their entire color coded dynamic is not magical girl-based, but in fact, Super Sentai-based.
